Thank you! I discovered it was because I had my headphones plugged in and took them out. That was it. I had to restart the program and then it worked. I guess my computer is jinky if I change something in the middle of the program like that. But thank you so much!
Some systems fully report these changes to MuseScore, others don't. For systems that don't, the quick workaround is, click the MIDI icon on the toolbar twice (turn it off, then back on). This restarts the audio drivers.

Oh! And yes, I did restore the factory settings and then it worked.
