Indeed, since F2 is the standard shortcut for entering edit mode (across a wide variety of programs), the default shortcut for the special characters dialog has changed to Shift+F2.
You can also access it via the button in the Properties panel.
The properties panel is in the left sidebar, same place you access all settings for all elements. While editing text, look to the left (click the Properties tab if it's not currently displayed) and you'll see the "Insert special characters" button.
And yes, on a keyboard without a physical F2 key, it's almost always accessible by some combination like Fn+something. Consult the documentation for your keyboard to learn more.
Sorry, I still can't find special characters, and I've been trying for an hour. I'm using a mac. Can't see a properties panel anywhere and it's not in my sidebar.
sorry I don't understand. I've now downloaded musescore 4 and found the property panel , but I don't know what you mean, 'While editing text, look to the left.' I can't find an insert special characters button.

You do have Fn+2 though and here Shift+Fn+2
And of course the properties panel, here the one of every text element.
(I've been missing the F2 myself, so thanks for telling about Shift+F2)
