Copyright on scores: is it possible to use parts of a published score?
Does anyone know if we can use (in an academic paper) a figure with a part (6 bars) of an original score (e.g. as the image below)?

Copyright for scores work the same way as copyright for everything else - so the answer is: it depends.
Is this an actual song or just some generic marimba? Did you or someone else typeset the score?
It also depends on what your paper is about and why it is using this piece.

This is an actual crop from the original score (which has 3 pages). Below I show you the full 2nd page, which includes the copyright.
What I wanted to know is if I could use just a part of this (as I showed in my 1st image)?

You probably should get permission from the copyright holder. Just to be safe.
Would they ever find out if you used this anyway? Probably not. But I would think that for an academic paper, you would want to be as up front as possible.
