Sheet for Clarinet

• Apr 26, 2016 - 06:59

Hello,

I create a blank sheet for Clarinet Bb. It had 2 flats in the key.
When my sheet was ready, I saved it as .wav, but it all sounded 1 tone too high.
The .wav sounded as if it was played on piano and not on Clarinet Bb. What should I have to to sound it 1 tone lower?

Many thanks, Johan

For Clarinet Bb to soundas 2 flats keysig, you nedd to enter it with 4 flats. Seems you started with a keysig of C-Major (no sharps of flats), which for clarinet means 2 sharps.
So transpose the score from C-Major to D-Major

I play clarinet and I use MuseScore continually.

If you want music for a B flat clarinet, set it up for "Concert Pitch" and the key it will sound in.

MuseScore will give you a score for B flat clarinet in a key a tone higher. I am always transposing to make my part sound like other instruments, so I change the setting for the score back to Concert Pitch. I am still using Version 1, where there is a button in the top left corner. I copy the C instrument part into the Concert Pitch score. Then, to get the score correct for printing, I turn "Concert Pitch" off. In either setting, the music will sound in Concert Pitch. You may need the reverse of this, but anyway, that is how it works.

(To the developers: I just can't get the "hang" of Version 2. I am 73, playing for an amateur group, and Version 1 will do all I want. Version 1 is in my distro (Mageia 5.) Version 2 may be in Mageia 6, which is currently at pre-alpha stage.)

If there is something specific you are having trouble with, please start a new thread and describe the trouble in more detail. MuseScore is such an enormous improvement over MuseScore 1 it would really be a shame for you to not be able to take advantage of all the fantastic improvements!

Your piece is written to be played in C and to sound in B Flat.

When "Concert Pitch" is active, you will see the music in the key of B Flat. That is what the concert-goers will hear. That is the score that the oboe or flute players use (I print music for a flautist.) Those instruments do not transpose.

When "Concert Pitch" is turned off, the key signature changes to C, and all the notes move up one tone. That is the sheet of music you have in front of you to sound in B Flat.

Transposing instruments are a confounded nuisance. Non-musical types think that you play any instrument from the original.

It depends. I do, because how the music sounds is the most important thing. If you want to hear the music in the key that you are writing in, yes, you should. Then, before you print the music, turn Concert Pitch OFF.

Then you will be able to play from the printed music, and be in tune with the sound file.

Here's how I would put it:

Once you set up your score for clarinet, you can enter notes either as written or as they should sound - that's totally your choice, If you want to enter them as *written*, simply make sure Concert Pitch is *off* (the default). If you want to enter them as they *sound*, then make sure Concert Pitch is *on*. Either way, they will pay back the same - which is to say, as they should sound. BTW, you can flip back and forth at any time.

Yes, that is what I was trying to say. I don't think I can add any more to this thread. I wasn't entirely sure that the pitch didn't change with the "Concert Pitch" button, but it had to stay the same, and you confirmed that. I was so tired of numerous sharps that I bought a second-hand A clarinet.

Yes, that is right. And it works for any transposing instrument, E flat alto sax, B flat tenor sax or trumpet. E flat instruments sound 3 flats different. One rule of thumb I learned was:

The clarinet adds two flats to your key signature when it sounds, so take 2 flats off when writing music. If you want it to sound in 4 flats, write it with 2 flats fewer with "concert pitch" off. That is the music you play from. For the alto sax, change "2 flats" to "3 flats."

I want to play Cause Im a Liar by Mcki Robyns-P but I can not find a music sheet for it, anywhere can you make me one for free I will forever be in your debt. If you can please make it have lower notes.

Thanks, Lily
