Musescore 2.1 goes into install mode and hangs after recent windows 10 update
'preparing to install' hang when trying to start Musescore2 after yesterdays windows 10 update.

Thank you for reporting this problem. Did you try to uninstall and reinstall MuseScore again?
Alternatively you could also check for MuseScore in the windows store. It's a free download.

Re-installed, rebooted no dice. Muse score is not the only software screwed up by update. Cubase 9 is also having almost same problem. Possibly related to driver confusion that OS has new policy for which auto invokes installs that never happen.

After update, lot of message from Microsoft to say how great is windows, but ... MuseScore is still working perfectly.
i have exactly the same issue since the Fall Creators update. Uninstalling/Reinstalling - or dwonloading from Windows Store produce the same effect. After installation and after clicking Finish, then starting the application leads to 'installing' and the message keeps frozen... "Windows Installer" -- Preparing Installation. See attached screenshot.

If just installing the latest version doesn't work - go to Control Panel to uninstall the driver and then install it again.
I have removed the Fall Creators update of Windows and now MuseScore 2.0.3 and 2.1 are working again...

Don't see this in update in log. Is it described as a MS Win security update?
DO NOT INSTALL 'Fall Creators' Windows update will screw up your applications including MuseScore 2.1!

Indeed, Fall Creators is a major update that has version number 1709.

I have installed the Windows Creators Update (Windows10 version 1709) on a spare laptop and there it seems to work. No idea whether someone did anything about the issue and if I can safely now install the Windows Creators Update on my main laptop ....

I think it has something to do with the Steinberg USB sound card I am using because they issued warning on their site. So this might not effect everyone. Steinberg has published new drivers that they say will fix issue.

I have tried it and indeed the Yamaha USB driver driver is the root cause. Unfortunately the latest driver from Steinberg does not solve the issue for MuseScore. The problem still exists and only disappears after uninstalling the driver !

If you are running the Yamaha Steinberg USB asio, you need to uninstall and then reinstall it. This fixed the issue for me.

How do I do this? I have these drivers and they are causing this error. They do the same thing for Sony Vegas as well.

I also had this problem and I simply went to https://www.steinberg.net/en/support/downloads_hardware/yamaha_steinber… , downloaded the Windows drivers on that page, and installed (just open the download ZIP file and double-click on setup.exe). That resolved my problem and is pretty easy to do.
FWIW, I ran into this on my first attempt to install/run Musescore (today). Good luck.
