classical guitar treble cleft plus tablature
Using a treble cleft with the underlying tablature setup I cannot place a bass E note. It allows the F to be entered but the input disappears when you try to take it one line further down to place the E . What am I doing wrong. ?

Hard to say just from that description, but I'm guessing you are trying to use the mouse to enter notes rather than one of the other methods, and indeed, with mouse input, as soon as you go too far above or below the staff, it can't know which staff you are actually trying to click on. Solution is to click somewhere on the the staff then move the notes with the arrow key (ctrl+up/down to move an octave), or better yet, swtich to one of the more efficient input methods like typing note names.

Recurring observation. See: #185056: Inability to enter the last note E with the mouse in Guitar + Tablature template.
To avoid it definitely by using the mouse, go: in Style / General / Page / set the value "Grand staff distance" to 7.5, and keep the file as a template: E staff.mscz
(alternatively, press and hold Shift key, and drag slightly with the mouse the second staff)

Thanks cadiz1. All is now OK. I'm very new to this and it's obviously going to be a big learning curve for me.

Thanks Mark. This is giving me a work around the problem. I find it easier to use the mouse to place the base F then use the down arrow key to create the Base E. If there was a way in the original setup to have the space between the treble cleft and the tab a bit wider then perhaps the mouse would have the room to work.

As an aside joking, voluntarily!
It's a bit like saying to beginner users of the keyboard: hey no, this note, you can not get it with the keyboard. But with the mouse, it's entirely possible! :)
