XQuartz version of MuseScore 3 for old Macs (10.7+)

• Feb 5, 2019 - 17:22

Since MuseScore 3 will only be available for macOS 10.10 and later, I wonder if you could offer a version that runs under XQuartz similar to Inkscape, which doesn't have a native Mac version. Either for direct download or via homebrew.

I am too curious why 10.10 and earlier was dropped? Was there a practical reason?

@enkidu QT supports OSX's quartz windowing so there is no need to make an X11 version to be used with XQuartz. Native is a bit of a misnomer, Inkscape uses GTK2+ as its toolkit, and although this does support quartz (GIMP does for instance) it is a little difficult to bundle. They never got the development to make an official quartz version, though they can and I have seen such builds unofficially.

Fair enough. Out of curiosity, what is the minimum version of QT Musescore 3 supports? (One post said 5.8 but maybe that was for the beta version) Does it still work with 5.9 which I think still supported 10.10? If it does work, are there any important features lost by using the older version of QT? Being QT's LTS release, they say it was good for support till 2020. Seems to me there is at least one OS that didn't quite have to go on the chopping block just yet.

I have an old laptop with 10.10, hence my interest. Not going to get much further with the updates I'm afraid

I guess I overinterpreted that:

Yes, with Qt 5.9 we can only go back to 10.10 and 10.11, lower Qt versions would need us to severely crippling the software.

PS of course I meant "may be available in the future", as soon as the Qt fix is available:
"The fix is scheduled for the first quarter of 2019 and should allow us to build a version that supports macOS 10.10 and 10.11."

@joshua.pettus: somehow I had the hope that the operating system requirements would not be so high for MuseScore 3 as X11 version. And somehow I always assumed that X11 applications weren't real Mac applications. Inkscape is GTK2+, I knew that, so not such a good example. I also know the unofficial Cocoa versions (osxmenu or greyscale). OSX 10.7 is of course a bit antique. There is also no current version of many other programs (browsers are really a problem). MuseScore 2 is still good, unfortunately MS3 files cannot be opened in MS2. Only the exchange via musicxml remains. The Linux users have it best, there are apparently no restrictions there.
