Problems with MuseScore 3

• Feb 10, 2019 - 12:27

MuseScore 3 looks great. I love the new interface and the automatic placement feature, but there are some things that really make it sometimes difficult to work with.

Text frames and brackets seem very buggy. I tried to delete a text frame in MuseScore 3, and it crashed. I also tried to edit a bracket to hold two staves and it also crashed. Ornaments also don't seem to be working right. As of right now, I haven't witnessed MuseScore 3 crash because I placed a trill on a note, but due to automatic placement, trills may sometimes end up looking weird. For example: I have two parts on a stave. If I have a trill on both the upper and the lower parts, both of the "tr" symbols appear above the stave, instead of one of them appearing below. I added a screenshot below if I didn't describe it very well.

Automatic placement is a great feature, and it really keeps any score from looking too compressed with too many slurs, dynamics, articulations, etc. The thing is that because the staff space is adjusted whenever something is added, the pages looks quite inconsistent. If a page is supposed to hold four sets of staves, some pages may only have three staves due to automatic placement. In my case, the staves sometimes go below the footer and it doesn't look nice. I'm not sure if an "automatic staff space" option is possible for the page settings, meaning that MuseScore automatically adjusts the staff space per page.

Another issue is cross-compatibility with older versions. I can't load plugins from MuseScore 2. Whenever I save file previously editted on MuseScore 2 in MuseScore3, I have to save it as a different file, ie. "Save As." I could just delete the older file and replace it with the newer one, which wouldn't be too difficult if I only had a few MuseScore files. I have more than 300. Why can't MuseScore just do a direct save instead of doing a save as?

I'm not sure if it's an issue with the program or my computer, but I've started to experience "lag" in MuseScore 3.

I might have sounded like a naggy complainer, so I'm sorry if I did. I just really like this program and I want anyone and everyone to get the best out of it. I don't know anything about programming, so I guess this is the best I can do.

First save from V3 after having opened a V2 file is easy: just do [CTRL-S], it points to the original location and name, then [Enter], you are asked to confirm replace which only requires [Enter] again.
So that's really [ctrl-s][Enter][Enter] that's all.
And having to confirm (the first time only) that you want to override the V2 score is a very good thing, because there are plenty of things that you can discover later in the V3 score that could make you wish you had never deleted the original V2. If you have decided to take the plunge and replace your V2 scores by the V3 version, the confirmation process is very light (two times [Enter]).

"Text frames and brackets seem very buggy. I tried to delete a text frame in MuseScore 3, and it crashed. I also tried to edit a bracket to hold two staves and it also crashed."

Known issues, see: #283546: Removing a text frame causes a second one to appear and leads to crash after new removal (in the process of being merged)
And: #280821: Crash when selecting bracket already in edit mode (pay attention to grasp only the handle when in edit mode - not click again the bracket itself , unintentionally I guess of course)

About other points ("Ornaments also don't seem to be working right" - maybe an existing issue, don't recall exactly right now -, and "the pages looks quite inconsistent"), please attach the score - not images, which aren't really helpful here.

Placed a trill on a note? Where, ie what page, an idea?

It's on the third page, on the flutes, oboes and clarinets. There are two parts per stave. If I put a trill on both parts, both of the "tr" symbols appear above the stave instead of one of them being below the stave. This doesn't happen in MuseScore 2.
