Score plays fine in 3.0, 3.1, fails online

• May 17, 2019 - 13:55

No need to include MS version; this score works properly in both 3.0 and the 3.1 nightly mac build. When loaded online however, https://musescore.com/bsg/scores/5573100 , all the parts go silent except the harpsichord. When I mute the harpsichord, all the other parts come back (in the online). This is very frustrating, because I can't duplicate it offline or even hypothesize what the problem might be. You can look at the score online and download it and try to figure out what the problem is.

No, I don't believe it is. It is some kind of version compatibility issue. They are running some version of MuseScore, and it is misbehaving, not the web site. The Web site posted it as I asked, but it does not play as i asked. I would be happy if you or someone else on .org looked at what is uploaded there and said, "oh, that's using the fljfeifewofh sound font; try changing werdefwe if the synthesizer panel." But even that can't be, because without the harpsichord, all the parts are fine. I do think this is an app issue, but if i could debug it further, I'd tell you what the problem is.

Hold on, did you save that score with 3.1 and then upload it with 3.0? This indeed can introduce a compatibility problem, esp. if you loaded the enhanced soundfont in 3.1, so all/most instruments automgically change to the the 'Expr:' variant of their channels to support single note dynamics. But then it won't play in 2.0 anymore either...

And sure enough: it doesn't play for me locally in 3.0.5. And opening the Mixed shows "Expr." all over the place, except for Harpsichord, which an't do single notes dynamics.

Not a bug, musescore.com is not yet on 3.1

Workaround: View > Synthesizer > Dynamics > To Non-Expressive, then Save Online

Nope, I can't reassign the channels. The damned string instruments take up three channels each, and there are five of them (vn, vn, vla, vc, cb). The problem has to do with the harpsichord being on "port 2" silencing port 1 somehow. I have to re-reporduce it (I clobbered my best score, but I can retrieve from online). What a mess.

I think we got it: https://musescore.com/bsg/scores/5571862 (different score), but it would be so wonderful if online scores could be played from other than the beginning (breakage du jour). I changed the instruments to non-Expr ones, and did a general reset and "to non expr" (maybe that does the same thing) in the Synth. So the bottom line is not to try to upload 3.1 scores until unless you do this to them? I don't understand why the harpsichord changes whether the expr's in the other parts matter.

I understand that. I own a harpsichord, but it doesn't make any other instruments in my house go silent when I play it. The observed effect was that the expr'ed instruments worked just fine on the web site, but when i added the harpsichord (clavicembalo senza espresso), the other instruments went silent (clavicembalo aggressivo).

Not sure, might be the new default for 2.1, and maybe that also falls back properly to non-expr. if no suitable soundfont is available, but 3.0.x does not?
Seems a backwards compatibilty problem that may need to get resolved before 3.1 gets released. We really won't want scores from 3.1 to not playback in 3.0.

I always see it, but I have another sound font listed first. Perhaps you can trick MuseScore by listing a soundfont first that will be easy to recognize in the mixer (perhaps one of your organ sound fonts?). You will then need to double check which sounds are assigned in the mixer when you tell the synthesizer to use espr instruments.

I don't ever do this, but in the three dots to edit the score there is a "Manage audio sources" option. You should be able to upload an MP3 made from the score that sounds right even if it has the default sound font. This shouldn't be a necessary workaround, but it currently is possible.
