Adding spacers to many staffs at the same time

• Jun 5, 2019 - 19:40

Is there a way to select many staffs and add a spacer to each of them with one command only? If I try to do it now, the spacer is added only at the first staff selected, so I have to put them one by one. This becomes a bit long in big orchestral scores, where some pages need to be spaced more than others.

Spacers are only added one at a time.

It may be better to decrease or decrease the space between staves in Format->Styles. If you decrease it too much, the auto placement will fix most problems with this. When you set it up correctly, you will need to adjust the spacing on fewer staves and it won't take as long to insert spacers. Don't forget the spacer that has a fixed height. You can use this to move staves closer together if you need to.

Ok thanks, I understood. Anyway there are some cases where a page has less things than others and it gets less auto placement, so at the end it will need more spacers between the staves for the score to look homogeneous. That's why I would sometimes find it useful to have the possibility to add many spacers at once. Anyway that's not a big deal.

It's not clear why you would be needing spacers for this, generally the automatic spacing of staves and the various settings in Format / Style / Page and Staff Properties should take care of this for you without the need to resort to spacers except occasionally. Can you attach your score and describe what you are trying to do in more detail? Chances are there is an easier way to accomplish the goal.

Hmm, I guess I see why you might want to, but I'd actually recommend against that kind of unequal staff spacing, not just because it's work, but because it goes against how this is normally handled in published music. That said, I can see this music isn't necessarily about adhering to norms. feel free to make a formal Suggestion to the issue tracker to allow multiple spacers to be added at once. Although probably a better way of handling this would be a more common request to allow staff distances to "float" between a min and max much as we already do for system distances.

Well, sure, just go to IMSLP to see lots of examples of published music. Here's on, for example:

The bottom line is, most editors simply allow the systems to be different heights, so indeed, different margins on different pages, no attempt to artifically add space between staves that is not otherwise needed. Space between *systems is another matter, for music of just one or two staves, it is indeed common to have the systems spaced to keep the pages equally full, and MuseScore supports this automatically.
