  1. Add one or multiple non-acciaccatura ornaments before a note
  2. The group of ornaments will always have half the duration of the following note, regardless of their duration values.

This is the correct definition of an appoggiatura (actually, one half in simple meter or for un--dotted notes, either 1/3 or 2/3 for dotted notes). the different durations are provided because it is customary to show the durations differently depending on the duration of the main note.
