Closing Hi-hat Noise

• Mar 29, 2016 - 19:28

Hi!!!

I know there is a MIDI standard code to the closed hi-hat sound. But, it isn't the same sound when we close, with the pedal, the hi-hat disks.

Is there a MIDI code to that sound? Which? ???

Could you be more specific about what you are trying to do, and attach the specificscore you are having problems with? If you have created a standard drum set instrument, the closed hi-hat sound should be what you get when you enter the note "F" as shown in the drum input window. That is the sound of the hat being closed with the pedal. If that is what you are doing, then it should work.

Hi Juan :)

This depends on which Drumset you are using.....

In the Standard drumset found in the Instrument dialogue you can find that information from the Edit Drumset dialogue, where all the standard GM drum mappings are given.

To save you looking though, the Hihat sounds are clustered on the 3 black keys F#, G#, A# in the bottom octave of a 61 note keyboard ie MIDI notes #42, #44, #46 in the order Closed, Pedal, Open.

If you are using the Orchestra Kit, however they are mapped to notes #27, #28 and #29

I see!

Thanks a lot for your data!!!

I thought I missed something about this. Now I can see those are the only MIDI sounds about hi-hat.

But... I'm looking for another hi-hat sound. Something which is more... "soft".

Well... I will have to ask some human drummer to play it for me. Hahahahaha!!!

You are free to try another soundfont to see if it has a quieter hi-hat relative to the other drums than whatever soudnfont you are currently using. The default soundfont works very well for jazz, where a strong hi-hat on 2 & 4 is often the defining pulse of the music and is often played very strongly (see, for example, Art Blakey).

I'm interested in something similar: the sound of a "closing" hi-hat. I think the physical act would be striking the hi-hat disks with a stick while open, then closing them with the pedal. Any way to get that?
