Saving to .wav

• May 23, 2011 - 15:07

For the first time since I've been using Musescore I've tried to save a score as a .wav file. It saves OK, but the resultant .wav file doesn't play and isn't recognised by any conversion apps. I'm probably missing something, but I should appreciate some advice on why the saved .wav file appears to be unuseable.

Thanks

Which OS are using ? And which version of MuseScore?
Wav, ogg and flac exports work well for me on Windows Vista, Mac 10.5 and 10.6 intel with MuseScore 1.0.

I left a similar post on another forum.

You might try this:
Once you have created your sound file in a format such as .WAV or .FLAC, you can then convert it to almost other sound format, including .MP3.

There are file converters available for free. I use the Switch Sound File Converter, available at www.nch.com.au/switch

However, if there is a problem with the .WAV file you initially created, then it will likely not convert. But a converter program is handy to have and I would recommend you download it regardless. Good luck.

No it doesn't. The score I'm trying to save as a .wav is a quartet score comprising two pages. When I select .wav as the save format and click save I get the progress bar up which trackes from 0 to 100% and then does it again, presumably for page 2, then the saved file appears on my desktop, where I saved it to, but then it will do absolutely nothing. If I double click the saved file - nothing. If I right click on it and do an 'open with' - nothing with WMP or Real Player. I have a couple of file conversion apps and the saved files loads into them OK, but then when I click on 'convert' - nothing. If I load up iTunes and set the import parameter to MP3, (which I've used to convert other .wav files many times), nothing happens. The saved .wav file is huge - 63Mb - but that's probably right. I'm just puzzled by this, but OK my computer's getting on a bit now, so I'm prepared to accept that it's my computer.

Attached.

I've got FluidR3_GM.sf2 installed

I Tried it with a much smaller part, just half a page, and the .wav file is OK. So it must be something to do with this score, or the size of the file on my computer or both.

I would be interested to see if a good .wav file can be saved from it by someone else though.

Thanks
(PS: It's not finished yet !)

Hmmm. Thanks everyone. Certainly looks like a computer problem concerned with file size, but I've never come across it before. Mind you, as far as I know I've never dealt with 60+Mb .wav files before.

Anyway thanks for the files and for tthe help. Much appreciated.

PS: Actually I was hoping to be able to go back and remove the score from my previous post, but I haven't got an edit link on the post. Could someone do that for me?

I seem to have the same problem as the OP. I cannot save anything as an audio file either. Whether I choose WAV, FLAC, or OGG the resulting file locks up on whatever player I try. The scores play just fine within the program. I'm running Musescore 1.2 on Ubuntu Linux 12.04 64-bit.

Posting a sample score and the results of generating the flac would help. I'm a bit suspicious that something else moght be going on here. After all, even if the audio file is corrupt, it shouldn't lock up other programs. If it was just one, I might believe that the file was corrupt and the audio player had a bug that locked it up. But what are the odds of multiple players all having a similar lockup bug?

Thanks for the quick reply! I believe I've figured it out ... I discovered that when I shut down Musescore and then tried playing back the files, they worked fine. After I've run some audio playback within MS, it appears to hog the sound card thereafter so no other programs can use it as long as MS is open. I'm not enough of a developer to know what might cause this, but I can work around it knowing the issue anyway.

Just for fun, I'll attach the score that I was transcribing when this all happened.

Yeah, I thought it might turn out to be something like that from your description. No idea why that might be - I've never seen this on Windows, and I don't recall anyone else mentioning it on MacOS or Linux. Could be some sort of issue with a driver, shared library, or something like that, I guess.

If you're using Adio Stream Input/Output (ASIO) then you can only use one audio application at a time. I use ASIO because I need its excellent latency properties on my Reaper DAW. I can use either Reaper or iTunes or Media Player or Musescore or Youtube et al, but if I've minimised one one of them and forgotten I've done it, and then try to use one of the other audio applications it will not give an audio output. Having to shut down Musescore to play your files sounds like ASIO to me.
