Switch instrument mid-song, to transposing instrument

• Oct 25, 2016 - 20:11

I am working on a big band piece, where the alto sax switches to flute. I know how to change the playback sound with the "Instrument" text, but I cannot change the transposition so that the music is readable by the player.

I saw there a comment about this not being supported in April 2015. Is it now?

If not, is the best work-around still to write two separat staves, and create a part that includes both but hides the unused instrument?

No, not directly. You still one of the workarounds discussed in older threads. There are a couple of different ways it can be, but yeah, two staves are often the key. For instance, one designed to playback correctly, one designed to look correct. The former would be made invisible in the score and have no part generated. The latter would be visible in the score and have a part, but would be set silent. There are other variations that might suit some people better.

This whole issue has been fixed for MuseScore 3, but that's still a ways off.

Same issue here as for making a custom key signature automatically adjust for different clefs - it wouldn't be obvious exactly what the adjusted key signature should look like. Probably we'd need to provide a full key design capability giving users some sort of options to show how to transform it.

Yes it knows pitch, bit not octave. There are potentially two different lines/spaces that could be chosen for any given pitch. Also the order of the orchestra is not necessarily deterministic in a transposed custom key signature. If you have unique enough requirements to need custom key signatures in the first place, chances are you also care exactly how they look.
