Higher pitched version of Acoustic Bass instrument?

• Dec 26, 2016 - 14:24

There's a instrument in the Musescore instrument list, the Acoustic Bass. I want to use the sound of that instrument in the F4 - F6 range, but the stated professional playing range in B0 - G4. Is there another similar-sounding instrument that can do that?

Thanks in advance!

If the problem is sound, then the standard MS sound font becomes silent at a certain pitch. The GeneralUser GS found at https://musescore.org/en/handbook/soundfont (the second listed under List of SoundFnts) sounds in that pitch range. If the red and gold notes bother you, you can change the range up as high as you like in both pro and amateur ranges.

There are a couple of things that give the Double Bass its sound, first is the large body of the instruments. There is plenty of room for the sound to bounce around in there when a note is produced. The second is the diameter of the strings, the very long strings must be very thick to make such notes and not break. Having said that, there are ways to play these notes on the double bass, the musician must use harmonics to do this. Most of the notes can be produced on lower strings using harmonics to increase the double bass like texture of the note. The problem with the computer is that there is no difference in the sound font if you write it as a harmonic on the E string or the G string. In fact I don't think it really even sounds like a harmonic in MuseScore. It sounds more like a double bass than a cello playing the same notes however. I don't play the double bass, but I have studied its capabilities. Perhaps a double bass player can pipe in with their thoughts.

If you play that high it pretty much by definition won't sound like a bass, but I guess the closest sounding instrument that does play higher would have to be cello. Not sure if you were wanting it arco (bowed) or pizzicato (plucked) - the default sound for the instrument called "acoustic bass" in MuseScore is a bass played pizzicato, but the default cello sound is arco.
