Lyric Spacing

How do you write two single sylable words under one note? If you use the space bar it moves to the next note.
This can occur when writing more than one line of lyrics under the same melody, especially in hymns.
For example: "There is" can be accomplished by using "There's" but how do I write "there was" or "then came"?
