Suspect this is a simple request from a Newbie

I have just used Musescore fot the first time. I am not a musician (mere drummer).
I cannot seem to add a 16th snare note between the 2 bass notes at the end of the first bar (see attached). Can you help?

At first glance it seems that you are trying to fit more beats in the measure than it supports (quarter + quarter + eighth + eighth + quarter + the sixteenth that you want to insert BETWEEN notes equals seventeen sixteenths).

Can you draw what you want it to look like and post that (as a PNG image)?

OK all, thank you for your input
In order: Underquark, ChurchOrganist suggested I attach the score itself. I thought I'd done that (drumtest.PDF). Does that mean you guys cant see the attachment?
lasconic, your score is EXACTLY what I wanted. Unfortunately I don't understand a lot of what you are doing (no musical knowledge whatsoever...) so I need to run it through a few dozen times till I start to get it.
This may generate a few more questions :0)
The first one is -- your score sounds much better/more realistic than when I run my score - am I missing some obvious setting?
Meanwhile thanks again all.

You attached a PDF file of the score, an image which can't be edited.

The actual score data is held in the file you save directly from MuseScore with an .mscz or .mscx suffix

Attaching this to your post enables us to look at what you have been doing directly in MuseScore and make alterations to then re-upload here to show you how it should be done.

The more significant problem, though, is that the PDf you attached shows what the score looks like now. That's not hard for us to understand, What we were having trouble inderstanding is what you wanted it to look like instead. So either scan in a hand drawing, or describe in more detail because as noted, simply liteally adding another nite would result in the measure having too many beats. Sunds like lasconic managed to figure out what you had in mind, though.

OK, well I tried. The result?
Pandemonium!
Things moved, things disappeared, things I didn't recognise appeared, my mouse broke (when it hit the floor with some velocity...)
The one thing that didn't happen was for a 16th note to appear in the right place.
I've reviewed the video a few times. It has the correct result but I can't really figure out what is being done. The online manual doesn't seem to cover it either.
Anyone care to have another go at explaining it?

It's still the case that there isn't much we can do without seeing the actual score (not just a picture of it) and you telling us *exactly* what you tried to do. A picture of how you expected it to look would help, too - I still can't tell where you expected the sixteenth note to end up or what you expected to see deleted or shortened in order to make room for it (there is not room for additional notes without getting rid of something).

The note dangling down between the 2 bass drum notes is EXACTLY what I've been trying to do.
Rightly or wrongly I've been calling it a 16th note as it fits between the 8 other notes in the bar.
So, the number one big thing question is how did you do it? (think not so much Note Placement for Dummies, rather Note Placement for Morons).
I wait with anticipation.

It *is* a sixteenth note. but the point was, this wasn't simply inserted - something else had to give in order to make room for it. in this case, it was the note right before - note it is now a sixteenth note too. so that's the first step - first you shorten the note that comes before to make room for the note you want to add. otherwise, had he not changed that previous eighth note into a sixteenth, the sixteenth he added would have come in too late.

so the steps are, first click the eighth note on beat three, press or click the sixteenth note icon to change it into a sixteenth, and that then leaves a sixteenth rest immediately after, and that's where your new sixteenth note goes.

my recommendation to you would be to study how rhythm is notated - either with a teacher or probably you can find a book that will explain things. because the first step in figuring out how to do something in MuseScore is to really know exactly what you want. as long as you were thinking in terms of inserting a sixteenth note into an already full measure, you were never going to get the answer. you have to first realize than in order to fit another sixteenth note in thee, something else has to give. so really, what you wanted to do would have been better described as *changing* an existing eighth note into two sixteenths (where the second one happens to be a different drum than the first).

It works! (well, to be fair, you already knew that - but I'm impressed)
Firstly thanks to Marc for such a simple yet lucid answer; I'm sure I'll have many other questions but you helped me 'get' the priciple behind this - genius.
Secondly, I can now see that others of you were trying to tell me the same thing. I was just too thick to spot it.
There seem to be some nice people on this board.
Thank you all.
