Changing Tuple Placement

• Oct 14, 2012 - 16:35

I have a score with a lot of triplets. By default, they are all printed at the flag side, but this causes the bracket to be printed through the horizontal lines (staves?). The score is therefore not really readable. This caused by the fact that musescore prints the bracket at the flag side of the notes.

I would prefer to have it printed on the head side of the notes, but I don't see any option to do that. I could drag the bracket upwards, but then I cannot get the bracket to flip around. Any suggestions?

BTW, in most cases, putting the bracket on the stem side is much better than putting it on the head side, as the stems often extend outside the staff. It's mostly for notes where the heads are outside the staff - eg, on ledger lines - that this isn't so. Flipping the bracket to the head side does indeed fix this, but so does simply dragging the bracket a little further from the end of the stem. The latter is probably preferable more often, as it take less space. That is, if the note heads are already off the staff, moving the bracket there means the music extends even further off the staff in that direction. But actually, when I check published editions I have, I see the engravers often not even worrying about any of this, and simply allowing the bracket to cross in the staff. I also see a tendency to always put brackets *above* the staff if there are lyrics, regardless of stem direction.

I guess the bottom line is, there are no universal standards here, so by all means, do what you feel best, and yes, "X" is your friend. It also flips direction of stems, ties, slurs, and certain articulations.
