Instrument name font

• Mar 8, 2013 - 02:39

This is a rather trivial matter, but it drives me nuts when I can't figure simple things out.
I can't seem to change the font of the Instrument names (i.e., the text that displays to the left of each staff). I select

Style->Edit Text Style...

Select InstrumentsLong and InstrumentsShort, change the font, hit Apply ... and nothing changes.

Am I missing something?
Thanks.

Comments

1- Style-> Edit Text Style, select Font;
2- Then> select instrument.
This should go (I hope)
If you have already written a lot, not to risk it.
Create a new score, select font, select instruments. Then copy and paste.
Meanwhile, welcome and good music.

Sort of. It's a little goofy. You can't create a new score without defining at least one instrument. That one always shows up in the default font.

Then if I follow your steps: After the score is created, Edit Text Style and select a new font, then any instruments added after that show up in the newly selected font. But the original one still shows up in the default font.

So it seems to get what I want I'd have to do this:
- Define a new score, with one instrument
- Style->Edit Text Style, and select a new font
- Create->Instruments, delete the originally defined instrument, then define the ones I really l want

I little convoluted, but it'll work.

Thanks!

In MuseScore 1.x, font style changes almost* never affect existing text - that's just a limitation of the program at this stage. For 2.0, style changes *will* affect existing text.

Depending on your needs, a better solution for now would be to start your scores from a template rather than starting from scratch. This is especially useful if you find yourself writing for the same type of instrumenttion a lot. MuseScore provides quite a few already, and one ight serve your needs already. Or you could just make the style change and save a new copy of the template (just delete all measures and save normally). Or, if you always write for different combinations of instruments but always use the same fonts, you could define a template with just a single - perhaps nameless - instrument, in which the fonts are already set as you like. Then in the creat new score wizard, simply select that template and add your instruments afterwards.

As an example, the Jazz Combo template provided with MuseScore sets up everything for an octet with four horns and rhythm, with all fonts and other style settings set nicely. I use that as my starting point for all small jazz group scores; I just add or delete staves as necessary.

*Style change do affect existing chord symbols and a couple of other elements that are not treated as ordinary text but are instead generated on the fly in a sense.
