Making fewer pages

• Apr 14, 2013 - 19:13

I have my composition nearly done,
thanks to help on the topic
"Editing lyrics to match notes".
The printout looks like it will take
three and a half pages; but I want to
try narrowing the spaces between
staffs to get it down to fewer pages.
Maybe there are other space savers too.
I cannot figure out how to do this.
Can someone help?
Crowding is OK, maybe.

My layout is three sets of five lines,
two for piano below one for voice. What is this called?
I don't know what a stave or staff is, and Webster is not clear.
I presume stretch has something to do with horizontal
distance between notes and thus between words.
Before I change that distance between notes I would like to reduce
1) the space between the title and the top of the top set of 5 lines (remove 0.9in)
2) the space below the lyrics (remove 0.25in)
3) the space between the sets of sets of three sets of five lines (remove 0.75in)
4) the space at the bottom of the page (remove 0.25in)
On the first page this adds up to 0.9+3*0.25+2*0.75+0.25=3.4in, enough for one more whatever.
So far distance between and size of notes is not changed.
Please educate me.

A set of five lines is a staff. The parameter "staff distance" descriebed in that Handbook page controls the distance between staves. Except for the two staves of the piano part. Distance between staves for a single instrument like piano is "accolade distance".

The set of three staves - or however many you piece has (one or two stves per intrument) is called a "system". And "system distance" controls this, except that it can apper to have no effect at first if you are asking MuseScore, via the page fill threshold", to ignore this and stretch the systems out vertically to fill the page if it is more than certain amount full already.

The "stretch" parameter in the layout menu does indeed horizontal space bween notes.

Note sometimes the smllest thing you can do to make a score take less room is reduce the size of the "sp". You controlthat n layout / page settings / space. Sometimes a small reduction here allows one more system to fit per page withough being too noticeably small and without changing anything else. Other times you need to xperiment with all of these.

Without seeing you score - the actual MSCZ file - it's impossible for us toknw what the best course of action is for you. Ad in particular, since we dont know if you've cross the page fill threshold or not, we can't advise you on how to reduce the space above the first system or below the last system of the page. It could well be that's just the page fill taking effect. Or it could be you need to play with the music upper and lower mrgins.
