MS 2.1 portable installed as follows:

  1. Deleted old MS 2.0.3 portable folder (but kept shortcuts file, customised workspace file)
  2. Double-clicked 2.1-portable install file and followed install instructions.
  3. Opened MS portable 2.1. Created a new workspace and changed some settings in preferences.
  4. Closed MS 2.1 portable.

In MS portable 2.0.3, the new .workspace file, shortcuts and other settings are in files in the "Data" folder. The "Data" folder looks like this:

But, despite the changes made in 2.1-portable, step "3" (above), the "Data" folder remains empty. So, it's not possible to copy over the shortcuts and workspace files.

Not the case for me, the Data directory exists, it contains the new workspace subdirecory and file as well as a modified MuseScore2.ini and a shortcuts.xml

Windows 10/ MS portable-2.1.

Sorry, tried reinstalling and repeating the procedure. The customisations are there alright, but the "Data" folder remains empty.

Indeed, it is empty after the install, but fills on first start, that much is by design and on par with the fully installed versions of MuseScore

I just tried again here too, on Windows 10 this time, Still don't see your issue. Where are you installing it to? (I installed into a new folder on my Desktop)

And as mentioned this all does work just fine for me, so there got to be something different for you.

OK, problem solved. There are two similar-looking Apps in the same same folder: (1) "MuseScorePortable" in the MuseScorePortable folder and (2) "MuseScore" in MuseScorePortable > App > MuseScore > Bin. I chose no (2) in error. But, IMV, an easy mistake to make because, in the standard and nightly versions of MS, the App is also located in the Bin folder.

These are 2 different programs, the MuseScore.exe in MuseScorePortable/App/MuseScore/bin is the real MuseScore object, while MuseScorePortabme/MuseScorePortabe.exe is the wrapper starting MuseScrore and make it a standalone portable, including making changes only inside the MuseScorePortable folder rather than in the make as the fully install of MuseScore does.
This hasn't changed with 2.1, it was that way ever since, with all MuseScore portable apps and most probably even with all other portable apps too.
