while i am editing my score it wont allow me to play it?
from time to time i would like to check if the rhythyms right but when i go to the click on the play button on the top bar it just stays gray it doesnt allow me to click on it

i have version 2.1 and my synthesizer was disabled so i reset the factory settings but the tab is still disabled

To view the synthesizer, do you also receive a message like this?
If so, click on Esc a few times.

This means PortAudio isn't working.
Can you take a screenshot of the "Edit -> Preferences -> IO" section, and add it here?

I am having the exact same issues with this program....ive tried the steps provided by all of you and am still having trouble...on top of it all, when i open up the program, it completely disables all Windows based sounds as well...I am using windows 10

So you are saying that MsueScore plays normally most of the time, but every once in a while it will not let you press Play? If its the same issue as the one originally described here, the problem is most likely that you have accidentally enabled Edit mode by double clicking something. Simply press Esc and you will be back in Normal mode (see lower left of the main window to know what mode you are in).
If this is not what you are seeing, then it must be something different from what was originally described here, so please start a new thread and describe your problem in more detail. For instance, are there some scores that play for you and others don't? Or all do most of the time, but after some specific sequence of operations playback stops working? Or does playback simply never work? If you go to Eidt Preferences I/O, what do you see? How about View / Synthesizer?
