Normally, from the Drum input palette, pressing the Shift key before pressing the keyboard shortcut adds a note to an existing chord. However, it is possible to use this command to add a bass drum, allocated to voice 2, to an existing voice 1 chord. In other words, Shift overrides the voice allocation of percussion instruments.

This is a deliberate feature. The behavior of Shift is always to add to a chord. This method of overriding the default voice assignment is very useful.
