MPEG 4 Audio is a very good audio format. Musescore should be able to create m4a files.

Comments

What would be the advantages of m4a compare to WAV, MP3, OGG Vorbis or FLAC which are already supported by MuseScore ?

m4a is just a container, like OGG, what type of compression would you like if m4a would be added ?

There are dozens of Audio file format and containers. I don't think MuseScore should be in the business to export to all of them. There are very good converters out there and they will do a better job than MuseScore.

In addition to what they previously said, I think it is pretty easy for you to convert m4a files into mp3.
There's online websites for converting files, in addition to programs for Windows OS and Mac

convert m4a files into mp3
this is not really the point, MuseScore can export mp3 already, this request is for exporting m3a. But most probably there are enough programs out there to convert mp3 to m4a too ;-)

I close this PR. Open again if you have more info. In my opinion:

  • MuseScore supports WAV and FLAC output which are lossless. From there, one can convert to whatever format one wants.
  • MuseScore is no in the business of audio, we already support WAV, Ogg orbis, FLAC and MP3. It should be enough.
  • M4A/AAC are proprietary
  • There is no support for AAC in libsndfile, the library MuseScore uses to do audio I/O.

These 4 reasons are enough to not implement yet another format.
