2.3-RC features

• Jun 20, 2018 - 15:23

One of the major improvements for 2.3 was supposed to be the sounds. Daniel talked about adding a Marching sound font recorded by the Duke Blue Devils marching band and a Jazz sound font with a group he was hoping would record it. These were supposed to be SFZ files, but I don't find these anywhere.

Another feature added is #273032: Provide an easy way to install soundfont, templates and instruments.xml . I expected to see a sample of this but but I don't find one. A sample file would be much appreciated.

There are now SFZ files in the resource manager I was not aware of. The only thing I had previously seen there were translations, which I always go through preferences to update. These SFZ files are only for Drum lines and are not the ones I was expecting to find according to your link.

To be clear, the extension package does indeed include SFZ files, but not that - also a workspace with customized palettes, customized instrument lists, etc - a bunch of things needed to support drumline music.

I don't think the intent of the new extension feature was to change the user experience for creating their own customizations - just to provide a way for MuseScore to provide packages of extensions that could be installed easily.

And definitely, it's been made pretty clear I think that 2.3 would be primarily about drumline / percussion improvements, not anything about new sounds for jazz. That was only mentioned in passing as a dream for someday.

I made it quite clear in my original post that the jazz sound was only a possibility. The handbook needs to be updated to include directions on adding the new percussion features, particularly the part about the Resource manager that had previously been used only for language updates AFIK.
