Stave names changing
Hi,
I have a song with 4 verses and a common chorus which follows each verse.
Odd verses are sung in unison by Soprano and Alto together, and even verses are sung by Tenor and Bass together.
The chorus is sung in two part harmony - Sop & Tenor together and Alto and Bass together
I could handle the verses by having a single stave with text saying ("S&A verses 1,3 and T&B verses 2,4").
and in the choruses it would ideally be
"Sop/Ten"
"Alto/Bass"
But I can't see a way of doing this as changing the stave names does it THROUGHOUT the piece
Any help would be most appreciated
AW.

I have hidden the staves; that isn't the problem, it is the names (or the labels) of the staves. So against each verse I want to see "Melody" (this name is unimportant) and against each chorus stave I want to see the appropriate part(s) as described.

If you use hide empty staves in the manner suggested this happens automatically. That is, if you want a staff called "melody" on one given system, then have an entire staff by that name, but only enter notes for that staff on the system where you want it to appear. Then when you enable "Hide empty staves", that staff will appear with its proper name in the proper place.
If you continue to have trouble, please attach your score and describe in further detail, and we can assist better.

I have attached the score. As you will see, the chorus starts at "Goodby-ee" and everything in the chorus looks fine.
However, I want the verse (everything other than the chorus) to state "Melody" against the vocal part, not "Sop/Tenor as it does against the chorus.

Could one more instrument be the trick (and you can change the sound from the Mixer)?

Shoici,
You mean have another instrument called "Melody" and have it only shown during the verse but hidden during the chorus? Suppose that might work, but it seems odd that I can't just change the name exclusively on the verse staves. If Marc doesn't have another idea I'll give yours a try. Thanks

Section breaks (pause=0) on the bars?

Sorry, I'll try to explain myself better.
In the attachment above (Ter) I have inserted some section breaks, right click on them to set the duration of the pause

Right click on the next measure to change the instrument name
Then, however, you will need to correct the bars numbers

Yes, a separate staff that only has notes during the verse is what we are suggesting. What you are doing is pretty non-standard - staff names normally label the instrument / voice, not the portion of the song represented - which is why it takes a slightly indirect way of doing it, but it's not particularly difficult either.
FWIW, instead of using staff names, the usual way of labeling sections of a song would be with rehearsal marks or other system text.

Apologies, I had to leave and come back to this after a day or two.
I tried inserting a section break (this concept is totally unfamiliar to me, and the manual does not say anything about changes of instruments). When I changed the label on the staves in the new section, the labels on the previous staves changed as well! So I'm even more confused.
I am indeed wanting to split the score into two sections, Perhaps it would better illustrate the point if I was trying to write a piece which had radical totally independent sections...
EG
Section 1 Soprano solo + piano accompaniment
Section 2 SATB chorus without piano.
Section 3 String Quartet. + Solo Bass.
How does one start the new section with totally different scoring? "Instruments" seem to apply to the whole piece.
I must have missed something.

Add all these instruments, add all the notes, then hide empty staves

Based on your own example, see : sample.mscz
EDIT: If necessary (in the most cases, probably), don't forget to add system breaks at the junction - as in attachment - of sections A, B, C etc.
