Tinny Sound Unison Notes

• Nov 2, 2018 - 03:39

I found that whenever I have unison notes in instruments with the same mixer sound, the playback audio is very tinny and compressed sounding. I've tested this on many other devices, and it only seems to be happening on my Macbook Air. Is anyone else having this problem or know of a solution? I'm using Musescore 2.3.2, and have tried resetting to factory settings. Thank you so much.

Could you attach a sample score having 'unison notes in instruments with the same mixer sound' that exhibit the 'very tinny and compressed sounding' playback audio you describe.
In other words, is there a particular instrument, or does this occur with all instruments? ... and only for unisons?
Please also state the sound font you are using when this occurs... and whether trying different sound fonts yields better results.

This is an unavoidable side effect of how sound synthesis works, not just in MuseScore but in pretty much every sound synthesis system there is. Two identical waveforms superimposed on each other will produce odd phase artifacts. It's going to be more noticeable with some waveforms than others, which is why sometimes you might hear it and other times not. The workarounds including silencing one note (via the Inspector in MuseScore) or displacing one slightly in time (via the Piano Roll Editor).
