MIDI input generates only chords
I'm a beginner, but can successfully use the computer keyboard to enter music. However when I attach my MIDI piano, all notes are just added to the current position, creating a horrendous chord! What am I missing?

Which input mode are you in? If you're in Real-time (Manual) then you need to advance the cursor when you're done with a note.
It could possibly be that your keyboard is failing to send note off messages. That would explain this. MuseScore needs the note off to know you've release on key before pressing the next, otherwise it indeed thinks you're still holding the first and trying to build a chord. Apparently some keyboards do this (not sending note off).
