Hi there,
When I try to add slurs to music, I have to have something selected otherwise the mouse becomes a no entry symbol.

Can you explain in more detail? How are you attempting to add the slur? If you use the keybaord shortcut S, or double click the palette, then indeed you need to have something selected. That's how it is supposed to work; MuseScore can't guess where you want to add it. if you are using drag & drop, you don't need to have something selected previously, but you do need to carefully drop onto a specific note and only release when that note highlights. This is also normal and correct.
Of course, slurs get added to notes, so without have a note selected MuseScore has no way to know which note you want to add it to.
