Better selection of Orchestra Instruments

• Dec 10, 2018 - 10:48

I find myself having to slog through to the 'All instruments' tab very often, usually in pursuit of brass. I think whoever put together the orchestra tab was a band player - Eb clarinet is uncommon and Contrabass Clarinet unheard of, but they're listed. Meanwhile, Horn in F is all by it's lonesome when orchestra music tends to come in every single key of horn, and two keys of Wagner Tuba. I've never seen a call for piccolo trumpet in Bb, while Bass trumpet is Wagner only. Meanwhile, the very common F Trumpet is off hiding in the 'all instruments' tab.

Basically:
Current Instrument List:
Woodwinds:
Piccolo
Flute
Alto Flute
Oboe
English Horn
Eb Clarinet
A Clarinet
Bb Clarinet
Bass Clarinet
Contrabass Clarinet
Bassoon
Contrabassoon
Soprano Sax
Alto Sax
Tenor Sax
Bari Sax
Brass:
Horn in F
Piccolo Trumpet in Bb
C Trumpet
Eb Bass Trumpet
Bb Bass Trumpet
Trombone
Alto Trombone
Bass Tombone
Contrabass Trombone
Tuba
F Tuba
Bb Tuba

Should be instrument list:
Piccolo
Flute
Alto Flute
Oboe
Oboe d'Amore
English Horn
Bass Oboe
Eb Clarinet
C Clarinet
Bb Clarinet
A Clarinet
Basset Horn
Bass Clarinet
Bassoon
Contrabassoon
Soprano Sax
Alto Sax
Tenor Sax
Bari Sax

Brass:
Horn in F
Horn in E
Horn in Eb
Horn in D
Horn in C
Horn in Bb(basso)
Horn in Bb(alto)
Horn in G
Wagner Tuba in F
Wagner Tuba in Bb
Piccolo Trumpet in D
Trumpet in D
Trumpet in C
Trumpet in Bb
Trumpet in A
Trumpet in F
Trumpet in E
Trumpet in Eb
Bass Trumpet in Bb
Bass Trumpet in Eb
Trombone
Alto Trombone
Tenor Trombone
Bass Trombone
Contrabass Trombone
Cimbasso
Ophelcide
Tuba

There's a couple keys I'm leaving out either because I've never seen them or I've only seen them once. But that is a much better, less oddly band-like list of orchestra instruments.

Is the Instruments table that MuseScore uses in the same format as the Shortcuts list?
Maybe i can re-categorize this table in the same way as we're fixing the shortcuts.
I'm guessing every instrument in the table has categories it can be listed under, along with other data. I'd love to get this list and clean it up.

Well, i think that the dynamic is that the programmers want to code, not assemble lists and tables into something elegant. They just need to know where the program can access the data and from which field. :D

I will tackle this menial work of making the list more efficient...;-)
