Delete Selected Measures no longer in the Edit menu

• Mar 19, 2019 - 13:11

To delete measures, the instructions say to select the measures (a blue frame appears encompassing them), then to "Go to Edit > Delete Selected Measures, or press Ctrl + Del."

With MuseScore 3.0, the "Edit > Delete Selected Measures" is no longer there (even when measures have been selected and there is a blue box). This seems to be a bug, unless they have deliberately removed that special Edit sub-function when measures are selected.

It seems to depend on how you get to the info. I used the PDF you can download of the 3.0 Handbook. If you use that, you find a link in the Contents - "Add/Delete Measure" linking to page 37. The first entry there says "To add/delete measures or create apickup measure, see Measure duration," with a link to Measure Duration. When you get there, the firsst mention I can see of how to delete a measure is an EXTERNAL link (top of page 57) to here: https://musescore.org/en/node/20240, which still talks about using the Edit menu.

Edit: the online documentation also links to this area showing the use of the Edit menu, below the area you mentioned in your link above. It's just that if you use the online doc, you see the relevant info first.

Yes, that is a problem with PDFs, for sure. Actually, any time you have multiple versions of anything, I suppose. I guess I should stick with the online doc till 3.0 gets some time under its belt.

Concerning deleting measures, it does seem that that commonly used feature, especially for newbies, is kinda buried and hard to find. I mean, I know that myself, any time I set up a new score (either from a template or just manually), I usually have a bunch of blank measures hanging off the end. I'll bet everyone does, at least when they first start. It seems kinda hard to find out how to get rid of them (not hard to do when you know how, of course).

I realize that menu structure and the flow of a program is VERY complex with a lot of decisions that are arguable, but that said, gee it is hard to remove trailing measures when you start out using MuseScore. :)

I read thru the comments in that request. Very interesting, for sure. It certainly confirms what I said earlier that menu structure and program flow are complex issues. Each time I read a differing opinion, I kind of thought "that sounds right," but then there'd be an alternate idea and that seemed good too. That's why they pay you guys the big bucks! ;-) Thanks for the help!

I just downloaded version 3.4.1 and notice that there is a new menu item: Tools>Remove Empty Trailing Measures. This is easy to find and a good name for that feature. Nice work folks! :)

No doubt. I use MuseScore in little bursts of activity, and then go months without using it, so then I get the updates. (It's hard to use a product that way, of course - relearn every time I use it!). Since I bitched about the problem, however, I wanted to give you developers a thumbs up, as it were. :)
