Number of bars per line
I want to have the same number of bars per line, preferably 4. I have managed to do this with those lines with more than 4 bars in them but I have some lines now with only 3 bars in them and I'm not sure how to move one back a line to make 4.

Then you may not have the same problem as initially described, after all?
Like need https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/layout-and-formatting#system-breaks to get less measures per system?
For more help you'd need to share the score and decribe more clearly what you want, what you tried to do to achieve it and in which way it failed

After using the Add/Remove system breaks button and setting it to 4 the first few pages are fine with 4 bars per line but then I've got some lines with 3 bars and some with just 1. It's fine when setting 3 bars per line but I would prefer to have 4, it seems too messy with 3.

The places where you have 3 measures on one line and 1 on the next is where the measures are too wide to fit on a line. You need to either remove the stretch from all 4 of these measures or reduce the scaling a little in Format->Page settings...

Actually you need both, reduce stretch and reduce staff space setting

If I understand your problem, you have 3 measures per line, but you want 4 measures on one line.
Starting with the line where you want 4 measures, select a measure and press ctrl+shift+end then right click the system break symbol above the last measure on the line and choose Select>All similiar items in range selections then press delete. This will give you MuseScores's default layout from that point forward.
If you don't have at least 4 measure on the line where you want 4 measures, you are either going have to reduce stretch in all 4 of the measures and if that doesn't work open Format->Page settings and reduce the scaling so you can fit those 4 measures on a single staff.
Once you have the 4 measures you want on a line, select the 4th measure and press enter on the main keyboard to put in a system break.
Select the next measure and press ctrl+shift+end to select the rest of the measures in the score. You can then use Format->Add/Remove system breaks and set the interval at 3.
It sounds more complicated than it is. With a little practice it's automatic.
None of this seems to be working but thanks anyway. I'm just going to live with 3 measures per line and hope the marker doesn't pay too much attention to the layout.

Also, you should note that when you do this, the four measure lines may change to 5...however, you can adjust this afterwards, by using the "system break" symbol in the palettes window under the words" breaks & spacers"...it's the first symbol...
You can click on that symbol, then for the lines with 5 measures in it, you can click on the end of that 4th measure in that line with 5 measures to make it 4 measures with the 5th measure becoming the first measure in the next line below it. It's quite the handy tool to use for formatting particular measures in a line. Hope that helps.

It won't work to me either. I have 2 measures per system and I can't get 3. System breaks just appear even at the second measuse, I need to decrease the size of the measure and the app won't allow me. I tried to do it along the whole score, it won't work.

The steps described to simply enforce 4-measure (or any other count) systems seems to set a new standard for "ludicrously non-intuitive". The time wasted by users like me wrestling with the software (and reporting its deficiencies) is shameful.

I wanted to have three measures per system for the first twelve measures, then four measures per system for the remainder of the song.
I was able to achieve this (in version 3) with a combination of manually placed system breaks followed by the automatic method using the following menu selection.
Format -> Add/Remove System Breaks
It worked great and the menu option did not affect my manually placed system breaks.

In the older version this was under Edit -> Tools -> Add/ Remove System Breaks. I think a lot of people were frustrated because this was hard to find so they were trying to do it using other settings that were under "format" or "page settings" which doesn't really work. But as of now in the newest version it appears to be under "Format" instead of Edit so it is much easier to find. Format -> Add/ Remove System Breaks
