Auto Insertion

I am trying to transcribe a score using Musescore 3 but I find that as I enter a note the program will automatically either enter a rest or join up notes that I don't want joined as there are more notes to be entered but the entry point has automatically gone on to the next bar.

Please in desperation and frustration - is there any way that the automatic function in Musescore can be turned off?

The philosophy behind MuseScore is that you have a time signature and you expect every measure to have the proper number of beats unless you specifically tell MuseScore otherwise. As you enter notes, the number of beats of rest at the end of the measure are reduced by the length of the note entered.

If you want measures that do not follow the (or any) time signature, there are two ways around this. If occasionally you want more beats in the measure, use ctrl+shift+ the note name to insert a note. If you want to totally ignore time signatures, then you can use the insert mode (click the fancy N on the tool bar and choose insert). All notes you enter will then be inserted. You will no doubt have the occasional rest left over in this mode. Select any unwanted rests and press ctrl+delete and the rest and beat will be removed from the measure.

ut assuming you aren't trying to create meterless music, then you don't want to mess things up by using the insert mode, which is not intended for normal music entry. The real suggestion is just to learn how MuseScore works and how to work with it. MuseScore doesn't create new rests when you enter notes, it merely adjusts the lengths of existing rests to keep the same number of beats in each measure as you enter notes. So just enter your notes left to right and everything works perfectly. Try watching a tutorial video if you continue to be confused by how this works, and feel free to attach your score and explain what you are trying to do, and we can assist further.
