Issue with dynamics when using lines and hairpins on separate staffs
Stumbled on a strange issue where one staff that has an 8va line affects another staff that has repeating crescendos/diminuendos. After further investigation, I found out that all lines seem to cause this issue, including slurs and pedals. The only workaround is to not use lines in a specific way that causes this issue. Present on Mac and Windows. Tested on the stable version of 3.3.1 as well as the latest Nightly. Easier to show than explain, so here are the steps to reproduce (using an example case, it can be produced with any dynamic markings and a crescendo or diminuendo):
-
Create a score with two instruments (4/4 + no key signature)
-
On one staff enter a whole note with the dynamic mf tied to an eighth note with the dynamic ppp. Place a diminuendo on the whole note.
-
On the same staff go to the next measure and enter a whole note with the dynamic mf tied to a whole note tied an eighth note with the dynamic ppp. On the second whole note place a diminuendo mark.
-
On another staff, starting at the same time as your first staff, enter 4 tied whole notes tied to an eighth note. Place a p dynamic at the start of the sustained note
5, Place an 8va line for the duration of the sustained note on the same staff
Expected result: two diminuendos correctly playing on the one staff
Actual Result: the second entrance of the one staff starts out at pp and jump to mf once the diminuendo starts
*Edit: updated the issue to include 8vb since it also causes this problem
**Edit: all line types seem the cause this problem

Confirmed in 3.3.0. Making that 2nd hairpin span both measures fixes the issue too
I did several tests to try to fix the problem without removing the 8va and it seems any ottava causes the problem. I put an ottava basso on the violin and the problem is still there.
In reply to making that 2nd hairpin span… by Jojo-Schmitz
Dont know if its truly a workaround if the 2nd hairpin starts at the beginning of the note. if there was no hairpin the written dynamic still wouldn't be played
Confirmed in 3.2.3 so no regression.
I did some more tests and all line types cause this issue
Just a quick update - still a problem in 3.4.1 and the nightly as of 2/3/2020
A current workaround is to use invisible instruments (file attached below). You could end up having to double the entire orchestra on invisible instruments in certain situations but it's the only way to make the playback function correctly.
