Text "echoes"

• Feb 14, 2020 - 06:01

I'm experiencing a very strange problem as follows:
When I use the 'Swing' text at the beginning of a score, the word 'swing' appears again elsewhere in the score but in a much smaller font. Additionally, the letters 'PvP' appear in a similar manner. I use 'PvP' (my initials) only in the footer of the page (Style > Header, Footer). See attached screenshots. Note that I had to use the Windows 'Snippy' to capture this. If I use the Musescore Image Capture tool, the text echoes/artefacts don't show up.

If I export the score to PDF, the text echoes appear in the PDF. In the score, if I click on any one of the text echoes, or on any other element of the score, the echoes disappear. However even though they are not visible in the score, they will appear in the PDF when I export the score. If I close a re-open the score, the echoes return.

I have noticed that the text echoes appear when I change the page scaling and following closing and re-opening the score. (I usually create a working copy of the score at the default scale - 1.764 - and then reduce this to 1.564 for final formatting).

I'm using version 3.4.2 and have had this issue for a while. I don't recall it having occurred in version 2.x and I only changed to version 3.x a few months ago.

It's all very strange and I presume, a bug. Anyone else seen this?

Sample score attached (SDM). Look at bars 31, 32 and 34.

Also, since my first post I've done some more experimenting. I think the problem is actually related to the swing mark (image) rather than the 'Swing' text. I previously downloaded the swing markings as per this page (at the bottom):
https://musescore.org/en/node/266325
I've added the swing marking to the tempo palette as described here:
https://musescore.org/en/handbook/palettes-and-workspaces#custom-palett…
That is, ctrl-shft-drag.

The swing mark is not actually visible in the palette but I can drag and drop from the apparently blank space into a score and it works. In the attached screenshot, the swing mark is in the box just above the word 'More'. You'll see it appears empty but is not.

If I remove the swing mark from the score, the text echoes are also removed. This makes some sense for the 'swing mark' text in bar 32 but doesn't explain why the footer text appears/disappears at the same time.

Drag and drop will very occasionally result in that weird invisible palette cell glitch. For this and many other reasons, I generally recommend avoiding drag and drop in favor of simply clicking the palette item (after selecting the score element(s) or range you want to apply it to.

The palette glitch should fix itself if you change workspaces and back, or just restart MuseScore.

As for the extra text, I don't see anything obviously amiss when I load the score. but then I don't see any swing tempo text or graphic in measure 32, making me wonder if you attached the correct file.

Based on your description of the problem, I might guess you had a marking on page 2 that you accidentally dragged onto page 1, This yields such "phantoms" that display on screen sometimes but not always (never in print), and cannot be selected or delete without first managing to get them reset to their proper pages.
