I created a new Key Signature in the Master Palettes, (see attached circled RED)
Dragged it into my palettes but when tried to use it MuseScore closed.
I then reopened and in Master Palettes, I thought maybe because I did not give a uniquely name to Key, but couldn't open the properties in the new one or any other existing ones. Again if I double click on the new signature in the Master Palettes MuseScore closes.

I can't reproduce this, custom key signatures work fine for me. Something may have become corrupted within your installation, I would suggest you try Help / Revert to Factory Settings. It happens again, we'd need to know more details about to reproduce the problem.
BTW, if you are doing what it looks like you are doing, you don't need a custom key signature for that. This appears to be a perfectly ordinary change from A major to D major. If you want the natural sign to show, just go to Format / Style / Accidentals and set your options appropriately there (the "After key signature if changing to fewer..." option).

Reset as suggested and worked fine, changed paths again where I have all my MuseScore folders and the problem reoccured. changed paths again but only moved the start up score to my default, and the problem reoccured. Set back to defaults again and everything working fine, so overwrote my default score with the My_First_Score. still working OK. then I changed all my paths to where I have them and it is still working OK.
Guess it must have been my start up Score that was causing the problem.
OK let's close this issue then. Reopen if you can reproduce
