I have a Mac so I read that I'm supposed to press Command + Shift + up/down arrow but nothing happens. I tested to see if the arrows and shift, command keys would respond to other actions and they responded fine. Am i supposed to have something else pressed as well, or something else already selected before I press these keys?

Are you really using it on a grand staff? It won't work between different instruments, only between different staves of one instrument
If that doesn't solve the problem, please attach your score and describe exactly which note(s) you are trying to move from one staff to another of the same instrument.
