Slow To Launch

• Dec 28, 2020 - 17:53

I am new to MuseScore, just a few days. Does the program take about 30 to 60 seconds to load?

I am using a Dell G7 7588 laptop:
- Intel Core I7-8750H
- GeForce GTX 1060 Max-Q & 6GB RAM
- 16GB of operating RAM
- 1TB Samsung EVO 970 M.2 nVME boot drive & 500GB SATA3 SSD secondary

. I have verified the GeForce video is selected for MuseScore. Even from a fresh power up, it just takes 30 to 60 seconds to come up when launched. The computer doesn't seem to be busy with anything, watch Task & Resource Manager. Everything seems fine, after MuseScore comes up.

Current application About stats:
OS: Windows 10 (10.0), Arch.: x86_64,
MuseScore version (64-bit): 3.5.2.311459983,
revision: 465e7b6

I see another thread talking about unchecking the Start Center, which I did during initial configuration. So, that isn't it. There was a mention that v3.5.0 did not have an issue starting. Can I go backward, or does the v3.5.2 install leave behind components responsible for this issue?

Do you have the MDL extension installed? If so, this long startup is to be expected and due to.l loading and uncompressing the MDL soundfont into memory

Windows 10 has a lot to do at startup, (background services etc.), so this is not a good time to check the speed of opening programs. Is it just the same when the computer has been on for 10 mins? Have you got a Windows update waiting to install?

Do you have a network mapped printer?
I've found MuseScore launch times to be extremely slow when I'm not connected to the network that has my default printer.

Amazing... I have a networked laser printer that is normally turned off. Launch time drops to about 5 or 6 seconds with it powered up.

I switched my default printer to "Microsoft Print to PDF" and the problem is gone! Going on day #4 with MuseScore, and I am again in awe of its capabilities (:>)

You get the gold star, my friend! Issue resolved...

MuseScore uses the default page size from the default printer to create new documents. It allows us to quite accurately guess A4 or Letter sized paper for the majority of the users.
Unfortunately, especially on Windows, requesting that Page size from the operating system has quite a long timeout for networked printers in the underlying call. (On my machine this can vary between 10s at home vs 45sec when on the VPN of my work).

This printer problem is new and interesting to me. The only time that MuseScore loads slowly for is is when I have an sfz sound font active.
As I understand it, there are four ways to connect a W10 computer to a printer. I don't remember how VPN works.
Usb cable.
Printer and computer hard-wired to a network
Both wirelessly connected to a network
Wifi direct.

Because I live in an apartment complex, I might have 20 wifi signals all around me cluttering up the frequencies. So wifi direct is turned off on all devices. And because my wifi is wimpy to begin with, I have as much as possible hard wired.
Wifi direct is the easiest to set up, but also the wimpiest signal.
I don't think I've had a MuseScore start up problem due to a printer, but anything I can learn about it would seem like good info to have in general.

Pretty interesting, isn't it... Applications that preview document formats use the printer definition to create the displayed image. One would think that the printer driver would be enough, but the software actually checks to see what paper is loaded, first. Using a virtual printer, like a PDF writer, bypasses the hardware part and sends back the emulated paper settings.
. I would presume any default physical printer that is offline would cause this issue. Mine just happens to be a networked printer that was off.

Interesting indeed. My laptop is about 6 or 7 years old (although I did put an SSD in it) starts MuseScore in less than 5 seconds. Networked printer on or off. Restarted or after running for a while. Something that I would think definitely would check the printer, Word, starts even faster. This computer has an old i5 and junk graphics.
Curiouser and curiouser.

The problem is we look at the default printer config to determine the most appropriate page size for new scores, including the default empty score - for some people it will be A4, for others US Letter, and for others something else entirely. That's why it gets checked right away.

Clearly more data is required before changing any MS code. You are running SSD and I am on a mechanical HDD which should make some difference. I don't know why my initial improvement was from 30s to 13s but is now down to 7s. However, I am pleased that MS and Chrome both open so quickly after changing the default printer.
