2) use any of the Add|Interval menu commands
3) note that the newly added notes do not preserve the ties

Wouldn't this be a bit of a pain if you wanted to add an interval to one part of an existing tied note/chord but not to the other?
As it is, if you enter the notes first and press + they all get tied satisfactorily. Press a number and the + and you can alter the length of the second part of the tied chord.

I can't imagine that being more than a 5% case and it's not hard to remove the ties in that case.
Surely the current behaviour can't be by design, I can't see any first time user expecting it.
It might be a design worth getting changed
