Everytime I try to enter a dot or a dotted note, the software crashes.
2019 MacBook Pro, macOS 10.15.7, MuseScore 3.6.2.548020600

This does work for anybody else, so might be local to your system or score.
So please share that score and/or try reverting MuseScore to factory settings

Re-installation and OS reboot didn't work. After the reboot, it was possible to enter dotted notes, but the loudspeakers played out some noisy artifacts, even on newly created sheets.

A restart of audio / MIDI devices in the audio preferences fixed the problem.
