How to make no visual difference between voices 1 and 2

• Mar 15, 2022 - 18:23

In my score, flutes 1 and 2 are grouped together, oboes 1 and 2 together, and so on. This is pretty standard score layout. However, I want to be able to separate out flute 1 and 2 automatically into 2 parts that way both parts will update with the score. I know of the feature in the parts window where you can only have one voice from the staff be displayed in the part, but on the score, I don't always want to the two parts to have stems facing opposite directions.

Is there a way I can have 2 voices but have them look like one? For example, some notes in a chord being voice 1 and some being voice 2, but they look like a single voice.

Also, some parts of my score utilize a2 to indicate that both players should be playing that part. Is there a way where this could be in both voices without the dual-stem?

Thank you.

There is no way to have voice 2 notes automatically act as if they're voice 1 chordnotes. But what you can do is flip all stems to set their direction explicitly. And where rhythms match, you can hide the beams/flags of one of the voices to make them look that way.
I personally don't feel like the effort will be worth it and would just go with dual voiced music.

As for "a2". That feature is also not supported in MuseScore; the easiest fix is to copy voice 1 to voice 2 and then turn voice 2 invisible. Since visibility is not linked between the main score and the parts, you should be able to have the extraction process still functional.
