Can musescore play legato?
I tried a small melody with legato and then the same melody without articulations, but both sound the same.
Changed the instrument to flute but it didn't seem to make any difference.
Can musescore play legato and articulations in general?

Except for a very subtle effect on some very few instruments, no.
It's more accurate to say, it always plays legato, unless you explicitly add staccato or similar markings. What it doesn't do is anything different for slurs on window or stringed instruments in which that would normally make a difference. So, playback for these instruments is legato, but tongued or bowed as opposed to slurred.
