certain ornaments need accidentals

• Aug 25, 2022 - 22:22

I tried for over an hour to put a flat above a trill. The note wa A-flat; the tril, without the flat above it, diatonic, therefore to B-natural. I wanted it to be a trill to B-flat and couldn't find a way. This would also be important on turns, with accidentals that should be possible both above and below the turn symbol.

I followed your instructions. But when I was instructed to put the flat in the staff text box, I couldn't get the flat to appear. I tried every way of staff text I could find and every flat I could find; no luck.

I'm using Musescore 3.6.2. My computer is a MacBook Pro using Mac OS Monterey version 12.5.1.

You mean you typed Cmd+Shift+B while editing the text, but the flat sign didn't appear? or you clicked on it in the Special Characters and it didn't appear? or you couldn't find the special characters dialog after reading the article about it? or something else? If you attach your score and give precise steps to reproduce the problem, we can understand and assist better.

What I did, according to the instructions: (1) Select the note and enter the ornament or trill from the appropriate pallette. [done]. (2) Ensure the note is still selected and add a staff text to it. [done to the best of my abilities.]. (3) Add the appropriate symbol from the special characters window. {attempted, but unable to get the flat to appear. This is what I need.]. And BTW, what is the special characters window? Isn't it the listing of the pallettes that is to the left of the screen?

No, the special characters window is the window that allows you to add symbols within text. Press F2 to display it, or click the icon at the far left of the text toolbar at the bottom if the screen. It's only available while editing text. The article linked above contains a link to the instructions on using the special characters window, you just needed to click it :-)
