When I start Musescore with a score, I hear the notes I play on my MIDI keyboard, but I don't see any notes appear. Soon I don't hear anything either. In the preferences I don't see my MIDI keyboard, so can't set it up either.

Apparently the driver installed for your keyboard is not compatible with the driver that is selected for MuseScore. Best to ask for help on the Support forum, and include more system details (what OS, what audio and MIDI drivers, what keyboard, etc). Then someone with more system admin experience might be able to help you get things set up better.
