My "To Coda" does not want to jump to the Coda

• Feb 13, 2023 - 12:45

Could you help me out? I must be missing something...
The playback order works as expected,
except for the jump into the coda...

I want it to play back like it's written. So it does, except that
when Bar 17 is reached for the second time (= volta 4), the playhead
does not jump from "to Coda" into "Coda. It's as if "To Coda" hasn't noticed,
that "D.S. al Coda" has already triggered.

I notice that if I turn off "Play repeats" in coda properties, then the jump works. Playback skips the third ending, however. This might be a limitation of the coda function. I wouldn't claim to know how the system works, but maybe a DS inside a repeat is the culprit. I don't know a way around it. I'm just reporting an observation.

Your repeat structure doesn't really make sense. You have a volta for 2,4, but no repeat to go with it. Voltas are only really meant for repeat bars, not for DS. Not saying there isn't a possibility a human reading this would figure it out, but probably 3 different people reading it would end up in three different places.

You can describe how you personally might interpret that, but according to the standard rules of notation, this is undefined. And I can pretty much guarantee that means you'll get kind of random results in real life. If you want musicians and MuseScore to play what you intend, you'll meed to rewrite this into a more standard form.

Read in the manual for Musescore 3 :

Jumps and voltas
One important thing to keep in mind is that jump labels should not be under a volta. There are some exceptions to this, but jumps under voltas are not normal notation and should be avoided. Also, if a segno, “Fine,” or “To coda,” is under a 2nd Volta that will never be reached, the D.C./D.S. will be ignored. The best rule is to use duplicate measures (for example an identical measure under the 1st volta and in the coda section) where necessary to avoid putting jumps under voltas.

On the subject of Jumps and voltas. Voltas require repeat barlines to indicate playback count so the volta know which repeat is being played. Even though a D.C. or D.S. causes a measure to be played multiple times, this count is not taken into consideration for voltas. A volta in the middle of a jump section with no repeat will not playback properly. It will always be ignored (the music under it will always be played) or it will always be skipped (the music under it will never be played) depending on the volta's playback settings.

I have to study your reply in a calm second to fully comprehend it. I used to think that voltas are simply a number for the current run-through: so 3. Volta = 3. run-through...

Like even this actually works and the bars under the second volta are skipped during the first play through:

Hi. Music notation is a very developed language. That's not to say there is no room for innovation, but most "needs" have an agreed upon solution.

It just takes a little time and effort to get a hold of a great deal of it.

Good fortune in your writing. :)
