Goodbye Musescore 4

• Feb 19, 2023 - 21:11

That's it for me. Musescore used to be fun, creative, with a user interface that lived up to that name, a "user" interface that now has become SEPWEDI, short for "self-entitled programmer's wet dream interface".

I revert to Musescore 3 for the time being. I will not relearn the complete list of shortcuts (I'm really surprised that Crtl-C and Crtl-V remained unchanged). I cannot upload the list of quirks and non-features because it exceeds file size limit on this server.

I'm out of here until you can explain why jumping to the next bar while entering chord symbols was such a bad idea, it simply had to be done away with. And why menu's now only open on mouse-up, not mouse-down anymore.

Comments

Interestingly enough, I am not a programmer. I have no problem switching over. I am exclusively a mouser and have no idea what mouse-up means.

Regarding jumping to the next bar while entering chord symbols, see:

Regarding Crtl-C and Crtl-V... they remain unchanged because they are (probably universally) accepted as standard keyboard shortcuts.

Concerning change...
Many years ago, MuseScore used 'spacebar' to enter rests. I thought it seemed logical, and so it became 'muscle memory' because it was used so frequently. Then, during some upgrade, the number 0 (zero) was foisted upon us as the "new replacement" to spacebar for entering rests. It still seemed logical, but I had to re-train my 'muscle memory'.
The explanation for the change was that spacebar would be used to toggle play/pause - much like it is used in many audio/video player apps. So, now that I could understand the logic and realized that I was, in fact, using 'spacebar' for play/pause in other programs, my 'muscle memory' adjusted through use in MuseScore.
(In any event, keyboard shortcuts can be customized, so I could have bucked the trend.)

ROFL... :-)
Ah! Musescore 3 was truly the workhorse and Musescore 4 is, in truth, experiencing "growing pains". ;-)

In a bizarro world where nations mandate what notation software their citizens must use, alternative notation software is born in the 'underground'. We've not gotten to that insane place yet, thank goodness. Prior to MS, I used MakeMusic's 'Finale' almost exclusively. For numerous reasons, I jumped off that ship, to MS. There are other notation softwares YOU have option to utilize.

As mentioned, the shortcut for next measure simply changed, in accordance with accessibility guidelines (Tab is supposed to have special meaning that previous versions were violating) and also for consistency with howthe next measure shortcut in note input and normal modes. There's actually only a tiny list of changed shortcuts - I think four total, including some you probably never knew existed in the first place? Basically the only other one most people ever would need is tie, which changed to "T" to make "+ available, finally, for accidentals, which never had shortcuts before. But you're welcome to change it back if you really want.

As for mouse down vs up, my impression is that activating on mouse up is more standard in general and less likely to lead to problems, such as for people with motor disabilities. But is there some unusual special use case you have where mouse up works better for you? It would be good to understand that.
