Segno alternatives

This is not a Musescore question but rather a notation question.

I find the use of Segno and D.C. to jump around the score awkward. Please take a look at the attached score.

I have used rehearsal marks to notate Intro, Verse, Chorus, and Coda sections. I then bounded the Chorus section with double heavy duty barlines (starting at measure 27). Then where the Chorus is to be repeated, I used the rehearsal mark Chorus at one measure with double heavy duty barlines.

Is there an existing convention that does something like this?

If not, is my intention understood?

The score you attached looks very straight forward with no repeats involved and so I don't really understand the purpose of your question. Start at top left and play through to finish at bottom right with no diversions in between that I can see. But if repeats are involved I very strongly recommend that you notate them the standard way.

DC al Segno, Codas, Fines, repeat double bars, voltas etc are well understood standard markings. If you do anything different it is likely that you will need to either write an explanation of what you hope for or spend time explaining it in person.

"Is my intention understood?" you ask. Well it depends on how good your explanation is. Some players may get it first time, others will not. If your music is going to played by more than one player, stand by for train wrecks as those who get it take one track while those who don't take another and the two groups meet head on sometime later.

Thanks for your reply. Maybe "repeat" is not the best word but the Chorus is played 3 times, at measures 27, 61, and 71, so 61 and 71 are the repeats I am referring to. The Chorus is not played twice in a row anywhere. What I want 61 and 71 to mean is to go back and play measures 27 to 45 then come back here.

Well that looks more difficult to understand than just following the standard markings you could use. It may be necessary to actually copy and paste some sections if standard repeat structures can't get you where you want. But if it makes it clearer, that is certainly the way to go rather than making it more difficult to follow but concise. Ink and paper are cheap enough, players time isn't - or rather it shouldn't be.

No, I have tried to understand what you mean in your earlier post, but I can't reconcile that with the score you provided.

You wrote " the Chorus is played 3 times, at measures 27, 61, and 71, so 61 and 71 are the repeats I am referring to. The Chorus is not played twice in a row anywhere. What I want 61 and 71 to mean is to go back and play measures 27 to 45 then come back here."

But your score only goes as far as measure 41. Please explain more clearly what you are trying to achieve.

Assuming I understood what your goal is:
MuS 3.6.2 can do what you want with some tricks. But it is probably coincidence because the marker types in the inspector are empty. And if another Musescore version plays it the same way I also doubt. Also inserting measures into the verses afterwards messes it up.
However, I think a musician can easily understand it although it probably never occurs in a score like this. There is still Varsegno, but unfortunately no third Segno variant.

Try it, look at what labels I put in the various Segno signs and D.C. marks.

Thanks for your reply. I like how your demo file is setup and if I can get this to work it will be great! I mimicked what you are doing in my file and have updated the file in the link. However, at measure 24 with the D.S. it should jump to measure 48 with the Segno symbol but it does not. It just plays through to the next measure 25.
Can you see what I'm doing wrong?

Yes!
Look in the Inspector for segno2 (measure 25) - there the designation must be "segno2" instead of just "segno". The label "segno" is already used for the jump to the chorus and as m. 25 is also named "segno" the jump from m. 24 goes to m. 25 - to the next 'segno'. You must use different names.
The same applies to segno3 (measure 40): here the label must be "segno3".
And then, of course, the jumps in measure 66: D.S2. must have "Jump to: segno2" and D.S3. must have "Jump to: segno3".
You have to tell Musescore exactly where to jump to!

I must add that changing the text from the D.S. and the Segno sign alone has no effect. Anything can be written there. This is only a hint for the musician how to play. For Musescore is decide what is entered in the Inspector.

BTW:
It might look better if you swap voice 1 and voice 2 of the guitar notes or just swap the direction of the stem of these notes (select them and press 'x').
