Understanding repeats on sheet music and transfering them to Musescore

• May 8, 2025 - 06:02

I am performing baritone in a 3 part chorale arrangement of Elton John's I'm still Standing, and am using Musescore 4 to create a backing track of the baritone part.
I am having difficulty in adapting the repeats from the sheet music to Musescore.
The "I'm Still Standing" chorus starts on bar 29 with a segno at the start bar 29, the chorus ends at bar 51, bar 51 has the message "second time to Coda" along with a Coda symbol.
Bar 53 is the start of the second verse ending on bar 62 with the message "D.S. al Coda" with the Coda symbol, this is where the repeat happens and does.
Coda commences on bar 63.
As written, the song goes from start and the first verse to bar 28, chorus starts bar 29 to bar 51. Second verse bar 52 to bar 62, jumps back to bar 29 for the chorus, going back to bar 51.
As this is the second time through, it is then supposed to jump to the Coda at bar 63.
I have entered everything as per the sheet music but it ignores the "second time to Coda" message and symbol and continues through again with the second verse.

Yes, it ignores the "second time to coda" because this is no function of musescore or in music notation.
Is it possible to attach your score? Then we can find a solution.

Here is the file in full, I have made a few changes but these are only in the dynamics to bring the baritone up over the top of the rest, and the lack of lyrics and chords.
One thing I did notice is on bar 51 where it message "Second time to Coda" on the sheet music, the Coda mark is at the end of bar 51, whereas in Musescore, the Coda marking is at the beginning of bar 52.
Like the sheet music, the Coda has been separated.

TheHutch sent me a file that is exactly as you described.
I deleted the Coda symbol and deleted the "second time" and it worked as expected.
A huge thank for your input.
All is now working.
As I said originally, musically, this was the way it was presented on the sheet music.

If you want it to say "Second Time" simply modify the "To Coda" text. You have to get the right codes into the music to make it jump the way you want. Once you have the right codes, you can make them look any way you want. (Be warned that making it TOO different from standard notation means that no one will understand it.)
