Weird Soundy Problems

I am trying to compose a piece using Marimba (as well as other percussion instruments) but the sound keeps doing a weird stuttery staticy kind of thing and stops all Musescore sound from working. It's only the Marimba sound that has been doing this so far and I haven't tested every instrument (cause there are so many). I am using the most updated version of Musescore and the GeneralUser GS FluidSynth v1.44 soundfont. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Musescore twice now and it still does it.

What OS, what are you settings in Edit / Preferences / I/O, what volume setting in View / Synthesizer, and can you post a specific score you are having problems with and steps to reproduce the problem?

Is there somewhere in particular you start hearing problems? I started at the beginning and played it until it ran out of notes and didn't notice anything unusual, either with the default soundfont or GeneralUser GS. Can you describe the problem in more detail?

Perhaps you don't have enough RAM on your system, or have too many other programs running competing for resources? Have you tried rebooting?

Its pretty much as soon it starts. I've tested other files that don't have marimba and they work normally. It's just as soon as marimba gets played it does makes a weird stuttery staticy sound that is hard to describe

Perhaps you don't have enough RAM on your system- it seems fine
or have too many other programs running competing for resources? - nope ive checked in task manager, all good
Have you tried rebooting? -you mean restarting? yes I did that yesterday several times

Looking at your synthesiser settings, your master volume looks to be far too high.

If you look at my setting you can see it is much lower.....

So I think it is highly likely that you are overloading the audio system, which would result in the kind of behaviour you are describing.

The meter bars should only be just touching the red section of the meter, otherwise you run the risk of overloading the Audio system which will result in digital clipping which , frankly, sounds appalling!

Hmm - the forum has chopped off the end of my screenshot :( So you will have to open it in another tab to see.

Just checked the General User GS marimba samples in Viena.

There is a huge attack on the samples which maybe what is causing the problem.

You will need to keep turning down your master volume until the meter stops red-lining, and possibly turn down the marimba in the mixer as well.

BTW laptop speakers are notoriously dreadful - I would invest in a set of external speakers to improve your sound - there are now speaker you can plug into a USB port for this purpose.

Rosalyn Sarah's last post (dated LAST YEAR) begs to differ: "Tried that. Doesn't work."

And if those are indeed questions you're asking, yes, it's just the marimba, and yes, it is a certain SoundFont. But why does it have to be that way?

Actually, after reading again, mine sounds a little different when the sound bugs out: instead of stuttering static, mine just starts emitting a high-pitched whine and nothing else that doesn't cut off until a few seconds after playback is stopped.

It's just an annoying little thing that I hoped would be looked at, considering some implications…

I assumed she simply didn't turn it down far enough, because she had clearly turned it up *way* too far originally.

Anyhow, sounds like your problem is different then, probably a defect in the soundfont itself. Hard to say without knowing more details - like what soundfont, what version of MsueScore, what OS, what settings in Edit / Preferences / I/O, a sample score and steps to reproduce the problem, etc.
