Can't apply symbol from Special characters box

Nightly d08e14c (4 Jan 2016) on Win 7 HP

This seems to affect only the nightly, not the official MS release. Create an empty stave text box (click on note and click Ctrl + T). Immediately press F2, to open the special characters window, and double-click the 1/2 symbol. Nothing happens.

It appears that entry from the special characters box will only work if there is already at least one character of text in the stave text box.

Edit: I've tried duplicating this result but without success. Perhaps the issue should be closed for now …
